CURR 242 (SS) Reading & Writing in the Content Area for 21st Century Learners

This course provides candidates with a comprehensive research-based curriculum addressing the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening in the content areas to the full range of learners (including struggling readers, students with special needs, English Learners, speakers of non-standard English, and advanced learners). This course emphasizes that reading and writing need to be taught in all secondary classes. Candidates are provided explicit instruction in the comprehension of literary and informational text and the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing successive versions, and publishing) integrating the range of writing (opinion, informative/explanatory tests, and narratives) for a variety of purposes. Candidates are provided instruction in the components of speaking, listening and the use of language to present knowledge and ideas for a variety of contexts. A variety of strategies, instructional approaches and assessment procedures are emphasized in order to ensure the candidate’s ability to develop, deliver, integrate, and regularly assess the elements of reading, writing, speaking and listening as outlined in the ELA/ELD Framework. This course is available to participants who have met Be A Teacher Pre-Service and Intern Program prerequisites. (PBS).
