CURR 234 (MS) Building Academic Language

This course provides candidates with a comprehensive research-based curriculum for teaching literacy in 21st-century classrooms. Candidates will develop an understanding of how proficiency in academic language impacts achievement in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for a full range of learners. This course defines and clarifies the relationship between independent student reading of complex text and the improvement of reading in a range of contexts. A variety of innovative strategies, instructional methods, and assessment tools are emphasized in order to ensure the candidate’s ability to develop, deliver, integrate, and regularly assess the elements of reading, writing, speaking, and listening as outlined in the California ELA/ELD Framework.
