CURR 221 (MS & SS) Curriculum & Instruction: Health & Safety

Candidates focus on the role of the classroom teacher in developing and fostering healthy habits and student health literacy. The Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools is explored and an emphasis is placed on life skills, positive behaviors and equitable access in order for students to reach their full potential in health and health education. Content includes personal health, injury prevention, nutrition, environmental health, family living, growth & development, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and communicable and chronic diseases. Candidates become familiar with laws and regulations pertinent to health associated with general education students and safeguards to promote healthy environments. Candidates learn how to recognize common, chronic and communicable diseases of children and adolescents, have knowledge and understanding of the physiological and sociological effects of alcohol, narcotics, drugs and tobacco. This course is available to participants who have met Be A Teacher Pre-Service and Intern Program prerequisites. (PBS).
